vffsVFFS processes provide safe and flexible packaging solutions that maximize our clients’ cost efficiency and customer success. Econo-Pak specializes in flexible packaging solutions, and we proudly offer a complete selection of vertical form fill seal (VFFS) packaging services suited for a multitude of markets and applications.

As its name implies, vertical form fill sealing operates by using a vertically fed machine that forms, fills, and seals the packaging on a vertical plane. VFFS packages incorporate longitudinal fin seals at the back of the product and have two further seals at the ends of the package.

VFFS lends itself to easy customization. Clients can add gussets to package bottoms for additional space capacity or to create stand up pouches. VFFS packaging may also include other features like zippers and tear notches. The sealing material (film) usually consists of a variety of materials ranging from polyethylene and cellophane to foil and paper laminates.

Versatile and Economic Packaging

Econo-Pak has both high-speed continuous motion and intermittent motion VFFS packaging machines that can produce a wide range of bag sizes and weights.

Here’s how VFFS machines work:

  1. VFFS processes start with a single sheet of packaging film rolled around a cylindrical core.
  2. The VFFS packaging machine then transfers the film from the roll to the forming collar, which folds the film into the appropriate shape.
  3. The mating parts of the film pass through vertical seal bars, which extend and create the vertical fin seal at the back of the pouch.
  4. Upon obtaining the required packaging length, operators or automatic/semiautomatic processes fill it with product.
  5. After successful product insertion, horizontal seal bars close, seal, and cut the films into individual packaging units.

All VFFS machines perform the same basic functions; however, various models offer different levels of performance, allowing clients to customize packaging rates, hole punch, fin seal, lap seal, nitrogen flush, film roll dimensions, and final package dimensions, among other optional features.

Our automated VFFS baggers offer numerous advantages. Typically used to package powders, solids, or liquids, these vertical form fill seal machines achieve speedy production and cost-effective sealing without expensive materials.

VFFS versus HFFS

Businesses often use two packaging systems called vertical form fill seal (VFFS) and horizontal form fill seal (HFFS). These systems are used to form, fill, and seal packaging. HFFS and VFFS differ in how they work and what products they can package.

The main difference between HFFS and VFFS is their orientation. HFFS operates horizontally, with products moving along a conveyor belt and being wrapped in plastic film that is sealed at both ends. On the other hand, VFFS operates vertically, with the sealing of one unit causing the formation of the next. This vertical orientation allows for optimization of time and materials since the machinery creates filled and sealed units in a continuous manner, minimizing waste.

Choosing between HFFS and VFFS depends on the products being packaged. VFFS systems are ideal for sealed sachets and pouches, especially those without zips or nozzles. It is a cost-effective solution that can fit into a variety of budgets. In contrast, HFFS offers greater versatility in terms of packaging types and closures. It can be used for a wide range of products and is particularly suitable for heavier items, as they can be easily transported on the conveyor belt.

Another difference is the space required for the two systems. VFFS systems require less floor area since the entire process is carried out vertically. This can be advantageous for businesses with limited space availability. On the other hand, HFFS systems may require more room due to the horizontal movement of products along the conveyor belt.
